THE BASICS
Whittier College 1, Lewis & Clark College 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-1)
(Whittier 1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Whittier sophomore forward Layla Traylor broke the scoreless deadlock in the 80
th minute to lift the Poets past the Pioneers in both team's 2022 openers.
Young was fantastic from the get-go. The junior keeper made seven saves in the first half alone, including six within the opening 25 minutes. She got some help from her defense late in the half, when the Pioneers were credited with a team save in the 36
th minute.
After being outshot 10-3 (8-1 on shots on goal) in the opening half, Lewis & Clark turned the tide in the second half and outshot the hosts 6-2 and limited Whittier to just two shots on target.
Unfortunately for Lewis & Clark, the Poets first shot of the second half would prove to be the game-winning goal. A long ball from inside the Whittier half found Traylor in behind the Pioneers back line and the sophomore sent her shot just past a diving Young for a 1-0 lead at 79:33.
The Pioneers managed just one shot in the final 10 minutes, with senior
Alexa Myers' effort going just high.
