PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's
basketball team defeated the Warner Pacific Knights, 69-58, in a
non-conference game on Tuesday night at the Pamplin Sports Complex.
Freshman Kristina Williams continued her solid season, once again
posting a game-high in points, knocking down 19.
The Pioneers are now 2-0 on the season, while the Knights fall to
1-2.
A layup from Maya Gross gave an early 2-0 lead to the Knights,
before the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-2 lead with 12:04
on the clock. The Pioneers continued to push the tempo, keeping the
Knights at a safe distance, before taking a double-digit lead with
3:06 to play in the first half. The Knights managed to cut the
Pioneer lead to 25-20 with 18 seconds to play in the first half
with a layup from Kelsey Mattsen.
The Pioneers continued to control the game in the second half,
regaining their double-digit lead with 8:00 on the clock and never
looking back. A jumper from sophomore Megan Spence made the score
58-45 Pioneers with 6:02 to play. Christina Herring's jumper
with a minute remaining in the game made the score 68-53, followed
up by a made free throw attempt after she was fouled going up for
her shot. Herring's free throw gave the Pioneers a 16 point
lead, their largest of the game. The Knights would close out the
game on a 5-0 run, but it would not be enough to pull out a
victory, handing the Pios a 69-58 win.
Williams led the game in points with 19, while collecting two
assists and team-high three steals. Herring closed out the game
with 17 points, while Spence had 14. The Pioneers shot 56.6% from
the field in the second half, while finishing 19-of-26 from the
free throw line.
Mattsen led the Knights in points with 16, while Kristina
Schumacher had 10. Schumacher also had a game-high six steals,
while chipping in three assists.
The Pioneers return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 21 when they
host Northwest at 7 p.m. in the Pamplin Sports Complex.
