SALEM, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
women's basketball team extended their Northwest Conference
win streak to five games after taking down the Willamette Bearcats
61-40 on Tuesday night at the Cone Field House in Salem.
The win moves the Pioneers to 11-3 on the season and a perfect 5-0
in NWC play, while the Bearcats are still in search of their first
conference win. (2-12, 0-5 NWC).
Willamette scored first with a three-pointer by Alex Zennan at the
19:09 mark, but that would be the only time in the contest that the
Bearcats would hold the lead. Megan Spence handed the Pioneers the
lead with 16:56 on the clock after collecting a pass from Kristina
Williams and laying the ball in. The Pioneers picked up their
largest lead of the game with 3:39 remaining in the first half on a
Talerra Rich layup that put the score at 32-9 L&C. The Pioneers
would score three more points before heading into the locker room
with a 35-18 advantage.
The second half began with the Pioneers maintaining complete
control of the game, scoring in the first 20 seconds with a
three-pointer from Williams. Keilyn Fujioka scored a jumper with
3:00 minutes remaining in the contest, to pull the Bearcats within
13 points, which is as close as Willamette get to the Pioneers in
the half. Sara Villanueva closed out the Pioneer scoring with 40
seconds left in the game after a successful layup.
Williams had a solid night for the Pioneers, putting up 18 points
while coming down with eight rebounds. Williams finished 6-of-12
from the floor and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Spence scored
13 points in the Pioneers, while Villanueva, Rich and Neva Hauser
all ended with eight points.
Zennan and Kaileigh Westermann led the charge for the Bearcats,
scoring 10 points a piece.
Lewis & Clark returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 16 facing
off against Pacific on the road at 8 p.m.
