Thorndike Scores First Goal of the Season in 2-1 OT Loss to Chapman

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. - Junior Anna Thorndike picked up where she left off last season, scoring the first goal of the season for the Lewis & Clark women's soccer team on Saturday night against the Chapman Panthers. The goal tied the game at 1-1 for the Pioneers at the end of regulation, but the Panthers managed to sneak in a goal at the end of the first overtime to take the game 2-1.

Chapman moves to 2-0 on the season after defeating the Puget Sound Loggers on Friday night, while the Pioneers open the season 0-1.

Chapman owned possession the majority of the first half. Olivia Do put Chapman on the board in the 24th minute of action after pushing the ball past the Pioneer goalkeeper.

The second half opened with a re-energized Pioneer squad, who continued to pressure the Panthers the entire 45 minutes. Lewis & Clark finally received a reward for its efforts in the 64th minute with a volley from Thorndike that found its way into the back of the net. The ball fell at Thorndike's feet after making its way through a congested penalty area.

Overtime saw both sides take the ball up and down the field. With time ticking away Celina Solomon found Rebeccah Bortz off a corner kick with a little over a minute left. Solomon lofted the ball into the penalty area wher Bortz headed it near post.

The Pioneers return to action on Monday, Sept. 1 when they travel to Spokane to take on UC Santa Cruz at 2:30 p.m.
