Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short In Salem

Divinity Singleton (12) was one of three players to post career-highs in points

SALEM, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College women's basketball outscored host Corban University in each of the final three quarters, but their comeback fell just short on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference 69-64 loss to C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
After falling behind 25-7 at the end of the first quarter, the Pioneers scored 18 or more points in each of the final three stanzas and cut the deficit to two possessions in the final minute. The Pioneers were able to make their charge despite only dressing six healthy players and facing early foul trouble.  
 
Junior Madelyn Sanchez led the comeback effort with a career and game-high 21 points. She knocked down a career-high five 3-pointers (5-11) and finished 8-18 from the field. Sanchez added two assists, two rebounds and two steals. 
 
Sophomore Divinity Singleton added a career-high 12 points. Singleton went 4-10 from the field and hit all four of her four throw attempts, while chipping in four rebounds, one assist and one steal. 
 
First year Kaitlen Carns was the final Pioneer in double-figures. Carns posted 12 points and a career-high eight rebounds. She also added a team-high four assists in a team-high 38 minutes of action. 
 
Sophomore DJ Kendrick tacked on a career-high nine points and pulled down six rebounds. 
 
Things did not get off to a good start for Lewis & Clark. The Warriors opened the game on a 15-3 run and extended their advantage to 25-7 by the end of the quarter. 
 
Lewis & Clark would slowly begin to turn the tide in the second quarter. Five of Lewis & Clark's six players scored in the stanza with Singleton (six) and Carns (five) combining for 11 of the Pioneers 18 points. After falling behind by as many as 22 points (29-7), Lewis & Clark went on a 7-0 run with Isabella Bernard (3-pointer), Singleton and Kendrick all scoring. The Pioneers went into the half trailing 42-25. 
 
Corban led by 20 midway through the third quarter (52-32) but Lewis & Clark would go on to a 14-7 run to end the frame. Sanchez (three) and Kendrick (3-point play) combined for a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 11 and Carns hit a late layup to make it 59-46 Corban after three. 
 
Sanchez led the way in the fourth. She hit three of her five 3-pointers (3-5) and poured in 13 of the Pioneers 18 points in the stanza. With the Pioneers trailing 62-46 with 8:56 to play, Sanchez and Bernard hit back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit to 12. The Pioneers made it a 10-point game with 5:15 to go and Sanchez added a layup to make it 64-56 with 4:45 to play. 
 
After an Alyssa Wyllie jumper extended the lead to double-digits (69-59) with 2:36 to play, Lewis & Clark closed the game on a five-point run. 
 
Kendrick knocked down a jumper and Sanchez hit a 3-pointer to make it 69-64 with 57 seconds left. Singleton stole the ball away on the next possession but the Pioneers missed a shot with 10 seconds left and Corban held on to earn the win. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Sanchez (21), Singleton (12) and Kendrick (nine) all posted career-highs in points in the win. Sanchez came into her junior season with a single-game career-high of nine points but has broken that twice in the past three games with 18 against Warner Pacific and 21 this afternoon. 
  • Warner Pacific earned an 18-9 in points off turnovers and 10-2 lead in fast-break points. The Pioneers held a 28-26 lead in second-chance points. 
  • Bernard chipped in six points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. 
  • Lewis & Clark went 13-16 from the free throw line (81.3 percent). The Pioneers are sitting third in the conference shooting 75.9 percent from the free throw line this season. The team shot 68.1 percent from the charity stripe last winter. 
  • Sophomore Lauryn Frederickson posted four points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Frederickson has posted double-digit rebounds in three-straight games and is averaging 10.3 for the season. 
WHO'S NEXT 
 
Lewis & Clark will open Northwest Conference play on Friday night, when they travel back to Salem to take on Willamette University at 8 p.m.
