HOW IT HAPPENED
Both defenses controlled play for most of the afternoon as the teams combined for just eight total shots. Lewis & Clark held possession for long stretches and pushed into Linfield's half early but couldn't turn field position into shots on target.
The Pioneers' first chance came in the 64th minute when first-year forward
Riley Yip sent a right-footed attempt wide after linking up with junior
Mischa Vanek.
Linfield capitalized moments later. After a foul inside the box, midfielder Mia Curtaz stepped to the spot and placed her penalty into the lower-left corner at 65:18 for her first goal of the season.
Lewis & Clark nearly found the equalizer a few minutes later when Yip's shot bounced off the near post in the 68th minute. On the Pioneers' lone corner in the 88th minute, Vanek's header toward the lower-left side forced Linfield goalkeeper Alexa Fritz into a save to preserve the lead.
First-year goalkeeper
Brie Maker kept the Pioneers within reach, making two saves in her second collegiate start and first against a conference opponent. Her effort included a key stop in the 31st minute on a shot from Lize Rendon that kept the game scoreless at halftime. Maker also turned away another attempt from Rendon in the 73rd minute.
