Juniors
Bret Potter and
Michael Aikawa led the offense on Saturday. Potter posted his second three-hit game in as many days and finished the doubleheader 4-9 with a run scored, an RBI and a double. Aikawa carried the offensive load in game one with a double, a home run and three RBI and notched three hits, three RBI and two runs across the two games.
GAME ONE RECAP
Lewis & Clark raced out to a 6-1 lead after 6.5 innings behind a strong start from junior
Owen Eisen before Occidental's bats came alive late.
Aikawa finished 2-3 with two runs scored, three RBI, two extra-base hits and a pair of walks. Senior shortstop
Brandon Gonzaga added two hits, two runs and three stolen bases. Junior
Gavin Mangano tacked on a pair of RBI.
Eisen held the hosts to four hits, a walk and one run in five innings. The junior struck out two in his first start of the year.
Lewis & Clark opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to Gonzaga's speed. He beat out an infield single, stole second and took third on a throwing error by the catcher. Gonzaga easily scored on Mangano's RBI groundout to make it 1-0.
Occidental answered with a single run in the bottom of the first inning and the game would stay tied until the top of the fourth. Potter led off with a single and junior
Dylan Lee added a single of his own to put two on with no outs.
Evan Carrubba-Rice put down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up 90 feet and junior
Evyn Lewis plated Potter with a sac fly.
The visitors made it 4-1 in the top of the fifth. Gonzaga singled with one out, stole second and Aikawa followed with his first home run of the season.
Lewis & Clark added their final runs in the top of the seventh. Junior
Eli Steinhaus reached on a hit by pitch with one out. Aikawa made it 5-1 with a two-out double and he came in to score on a Mangano RBI single.
Occidental chipped away at the lead over the next two innings. They scored two, two-out runs on a double to left-center in the sixth. The Tigers tied the game in the eighth thanks to three more two-out runs.
Lewis & Clark put two runners on with one out in the top of the ninth but the Occidental reliever retired the next two batters.
In the bottom of the ninth, Occidental used a walk and a sac bunt to put the game-winning run on second and Mateo Morales came through with a walk-off single.
GAME TWO RECAP
Occidental scored six runs in the first four innings and the Tigers pitching staff stranded 13 Lewis & Clark batters while the River Otters tried to mount a comeback.
Potter posted three of the team's eight hits and added a double and an RBI. Senior
Ryan Sanderson made his first appearance since 2024 and belted his first collegiate home run and recorded a team-high two RBI.
First year
Calvin Martinez made his first collegiate start and pitched better than the score would indicate. He went five innings and scattered four hits and two walks. The first year gave up six runs but only two were earned and he notched his first collegiate strikeout. Fellow first year
Vaughn McCrea made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen. McCrea went the final three innings and allowed three hits, two walks and two runs while striking out one.
Occidental struck for five runs in the bottom of the second inning but only one of the runs was earned. Lewis & Clark committed two of their three errors during the inning to help Occidental extend the frame.
With the River Otters trailing 6-0 in the top of the sixth, junior transfer
Evan Maury singled with two down and Sanderson followed with a two-run blast down the right-field line.
Lewis & Clark cut the deficit to 6-3 in the seventh. With two outs, Gonzaga walked and stole second base. Aikawa followed with a walk of his own and Potter delivered an RBI single to make it 6-3. Both runners would move into scoring position on a wild pitch but the Occidental reliever induced a fly out to left to keep the deficit at three.
Occidental scored a single run in the seventh and eighth inning to make it 8-3. Lewis & Clark would load the bases in each of their final two at-bats but the Occidental bullpen induced a pop up and then struck out the side in the ninth.
