Strong Start Leads Softball To Doubleheader Split On Opening Day

Junior Harper Campanella drove in four runs in the game one win

CLAREMONT, Calif.—Lewis & Clark College softball jumped all over Pomona-Pitzer in the top of the first of game one, to win their season opener for a fifth-straight year and earn a season-opening split on Friday.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 7, Pomona-Pitzer 5
Pomona-Pitzer 8, Lewis & Clark 0 (5 Innings)
(Lewis & Clark 1-1)
(Pomona-Pitzer 2-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Junior Harper Campanella opened the scoring with a bases-clearing double and added a home run in game one to pace Lewis & Clark in the opener. Senior Maggie O'Leary added 3.2 strong innings in the circle to earn the win in the season opener for a third-straight year.

GAME ONE RECAP

Lewis & Clark raced out to a 6-0 lead and held off a late Sagehens rally to earn a 7-5 win in their season opener.

Campanella had a fantastic opener. The junior designated player went 3-4 with two runs scored, four RBI, a double and a home run.

First year Kodie Ancheta and senior Madison Scroggins each joined Campanella with multiple hits in the contest. Ancheta went 2-4 with a run scored and a double in her first collegiate contest. Scroggins chipped in two hits in three at-bats out of the nine-hole.

Junior Makena Dahir and Lacey Marglin also enjoyed strong game ones. Dahir hit a solo home run and scored twice. Marglin chipped in a base hit, a run scored and an RBI in two at-bats.

In the circle, O'Leary started and finished the game. The senior threw 3.2 innings and struck out seven while walking one. She scattered five hits and two earned runs. Junior Ryan Jurischk threw 3.1 innings of relief and allowed four hits and three runs.

Lewis & Clark jumped all over Pomona-Pitzer starter Mia  Lopez. Gina Ozuna reached on a leadoff error and Ancheta followed with a single to left field to put two runners on. After a fielder's choice wiped out Ozuna at third base, Dahir walked to load the bases with one down. Campanella plated all three runners with a double to right-center to make it 3-0 just five batters into the game. Campanella took third base on a wild pitch and scampered home on a Marglin RBI single to center field.

After giving up a leadoff single in the bottom of the first, O'Leary struck out the side to keep the score 4-0. The senior would post five of her seven strikeouts in the first two innings.

Lewis & Clark added to their lead in the third. Campanella opened the frame with a line-drive homer onto the beach behind the left-field fence. Marglin followed with a walk, took second on a sac bunt and raced home on an RBI single from Abby Yamashita

The hosts responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, when Kylie Liu hit a two-run homer with one out.

Dahir closed out the scoring for Lewis & Clark in the top of the fourth. The junior crushed a homer to right field to push the lead back to 7-2.

Jurischk allowed just one hit in her first three innings of relief work but ran into trouble in the seventh. With a runner on first and one out, Yuri Song singled and Liu followed with her second home run of the game to make it 7-5.

O'Leary checked back into the game in the circle and gave up back-to-back singles to bring the game-winning run to the plate. The senior ace retired the next batter on a groundout and then struck out Natalie Murguia to secure the win.

GAME TWO RECAP

Pomona-Pitzer ace Audrey Reimers held Lewis & Clark to four hits and the Sagehens scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the win.

Senior Emily Patton went 2-2 to lead Lewis & Clark's offense. Ozuna and senior McKenna Zehnder each chipped in a hit apiece. Lewis & Clark had a number of hard-hit balls that the Sagehens were able to track down and turn into outs.

Senior Charlize Pope earned the start in game two. Pope allowed three hits and six runs but only two of the runs were earned. She struck out one and walked four. Junior Sofia Garcia came on in relief and posted two outs, while giving up two hits and two unearned runs.

The hosts used small ball to grab a 1-0 lead in the first. The leadoff hitter singled, took second on a sac bunt, third on a fly out and raced home on a passed ball.

Pomona-Pitzer added a second run in the second. The Sagehens used a single, a walk and an RBI single from Reimers to push their advantage to 2-0.

Lewis & Clark had their best chance to score in the top of the third. Patton and Ozuna posted back-to-back singles but Reimers retired the next two batters to close out the threat.

The hosts scored six runs, all unearned, to seal the win in the fifth. They took advantage of a pair of River Otters errors and several tight calls that went against Lewis & Clark, to secure the mercy-rule win.
