Pacific Slips Past Men's Soccer 1-0

Freshman Declan Cloutier made a career-high 7 saves in his first career start

FOREST GROVE, Ore.—Despite a career-high seven high saves from freshman goalie Declan Cloutier, Lewis & Clark College men's soccer fell 1-0 to host Pacific University on Monday night at Hanson Stadium.

THE BASICS
Pacific University 1, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 0-5)
(Pacific 1-8-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore Cooper Sheakley scored a one-timer goal 66:32 into the contest to lift the Boxers past the Pioneers.

Cloutier, who was making his first collegiate regular-season start, made two saves in the first half and five more in the second half.

For the second-straight day, Lewis & Clark held a future Northwest Conference opponent's offense in check for most of the game.

The Pioneers defense allowed just five shots and two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. Pacific managed just one shot in the opening 20 minutes of the second half, before Sheakley scored a one-timer goal off a feed from Nico Allen.

Pacific put the pressure on late as they looked for an insurance goal, but Cloutier was up to the task. The freshman made three saves in the final 4:15 to help the Pioneers register their fewest goals allowed in a regular-season contest.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pioneers one-goal loss was their closest of the season against a future NWC foe. Lewis & Clark has now played five NWC foes and four of the five games have been decided by one or two goals.
  • In his past two outings (last Thursday against Multnomah's JV team), Cloutier has made 11 saves on 14 shots.
  • Ben Schwartz, Wesley Esparza Salazar and Levi Stahl all played the full 90 minutes in the contest. Today's game was the Pioneers third in the past five days. Stahl and Schwartz each played 90 minutes on Saturday and Sunday.
WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark will return to action next Monday, when they begin a season-ending, three-game homestand. The Pioneers will take on Warner Pacific University at 4:30 p.m.
