Women’s Soccer Falls 2-0 To NWC Champion PLU

Seniors Giselle Bodeen, Celeste Schreifels, and Macy O’Hara records shots in loss.

TACOMA, Wash. – Lewis & Clark College women's soccer held Pacific Lutheran University to their lowest point total in the last two weeks, but the Lutes prevailed 2-0 and clinched their seventh consecutive Northwest Conference women's soccer title.

THE BASICS

Pacific Lutheran 2, Lewis & Clark 0
(Lewis & Clark 5-10-3, NWC 4-7-3)
(Pacific Lutheran 11-2-0, NWC 13-3-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Sophia Young recorded two saves in the game, both in the first half, and the Pioneer defense blocked five shots to hold the Lutes to their lowest point total in a win since October 4.

Seniors Giselle Bodeen, Celeste Schreifels, and Macy O'Hara all recorded shots for the Pioneers as they attempted to record a goal against the Lutes.

Young recorded her first save of the game when she dove and deflected a shot at the near post by Pacific Lutheran's Sawyer Anderson in the 14th minute. The deflection sailed to the foot of the Lutes' Hannah Cecil, who booted it back at Young, and the ball bounced off her foot and into the net to put the Lutes up 1-0.

Bodeen attempted to tie the game before the half with a run to the middle of the box, but PLU keeper Abby Winkler grabbed her left-foot shot in the 43rd minute.

Lyla Merte found the ball after a Lutes' corner kick made its way to the left side of the box; her first shot was blocked, but her follow-up of the deflection dribbled across the line for the 2-0 lead in the 54th minute.

Lewis & Clark looked to cut the lead in half on a throwing by senior Grace Billings in the 71st minute. The ball bounced off the head of senior Sasha Raimondo, the foot of freshman Grace Smith, and found Schreifels, whose header was blocked by Winkler and deflected back into the box. The Lutes could not clear the ball, and Smith found O'Hara, who booted the ball from the top of the box, but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
