Women’s Basketball Falls on Road to Pirates

Lauryn Frederickson scored game-high 24 points, Madelyn Sanchez grabbed game-high seven rebounds.

SPOKANE, Wash. —Lewis & Clark College held a 20-14 advantage after the first quarter but fell to Whitworth University 69-59 in Northwest Conference women's basketball action on Saturday night at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore Lauryn Frederickson scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead the Pioneers. First-year Kaitlen Carns chipped in 13 points to round out the double-digit scoring for Lewis & Clark and was second on the team with six rebounds. Sophomore DJ Kendrick chipped in eight points, and junior Madelyn Sanchez pulled down seven game-high boards.

Carns started an 8-0 Pioneers' scoring run at the seven-minute mark with an and-1 play and Frederickson capped it off with a trey to give the Pios' a 12-5 lead at the 5:39 mark. Sophomore Divinity Singleton (four points, five rebounds) gave Lewis & Clark their largest lead with 1:42 left in the first quarter when her layup made it 20-11.  

Whitworth responded in the middle quarters, outscoring the Pioneers 21-11 to take a 35-31 halftime advantage. The Pirates then held Lewis & Clark to 10 points in the third quarter for a 52-41 lead heading into the final frame.

The Pioneers mounted a late comeback attempt, with a 10-2 scoring run to cut their deficit to five, 60-55 with 1:43 left in the game. Whitworth closed out the game on a 9-4 run to secure the win.  

Ashlyn Peterson tied Frederickson with 24 points to lead Whitworth.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Junior Tatiana Rebanal and sophomore Madilyn Palosi led the Pioneers with two steals each.
  • The Pioneers held a 34-26 advantage for points in the paint, and the bench outscored the Pirates 17-11.
  • Carns led the team with four assists, Rebanal added three, and Palosi dished out two.

WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark returns home to host Northwest Indian College at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday in their final non-conference game.
