PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College baseball bounced back from a shutout loss in the opener to earn a dramatic 7-6 extra-inning victory over Whitworth University in the nightcap, splitting Saturday's Northwest Conference doubleheader at
Jerry Gatto Field. The Pioneers overcame a four-run deficit in Game 2, scoring five unanswered runs to secure their second conference win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers were held scoreless in the opener as Whitworth's A.J. Woodward pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five. Sophomore
Owen Eisen took his first collegiate loss despite a solid six-inning effort.
Lewis & Clark mounted an impressive comeback in the nightcap after trailing 6-2 through eight innings. The Pioneers scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to force extra innings before junior
Brandon Gonzaga delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th.
Senior
Brennen Davis reached base four times in the doubleheader, including a double and two runs scored in the second game. Sophomore
Bret Potter collected four hits and two RBI across both games. Senior
Justin Cavagnaro recorded three hits, two RBI, and a stolen base on the day.
Gonzaga finished with three hits, including a double and the game-winning single in Game 2, while senior
Will Heron added a double and scored two runs.
Junior
Nate Kerr earned his second win of the season with two scoreless innings of relief in Game 2, striking out two without allowing a hit.
GAME ONE RECAP
Whitworth struck early, scoring two runs in the top of the first and extending its lead to 3-0 in the third.
Eisen settled in after the third, holding the Pirates scoreless over the next three innings. The sophomore right-hander finished with three strikeouts, allowing four hits over six innings.
The Pioneers' best scoring opportunity came in the fourth when junior
Joaquin Sandoval doubled down the left-field line and advanced to third on Heron's groundout, but Woodward induced a flyout to end the threat.
Whitworth broke the game open in the seventh against reliever
Dillon Foster, when Aidan Morrison connected for a two-run homer to left field, pushing the Pirates' lead to 5-0.
The Pirates added three more runs in the ninth on Carson Coffield's three-run homer, sealing the 8-0 win.
Lewis & Clark managed just five hits, with Cavagnaro and Potter each collecting two singles. Sandoval's double was the Pioneers' only extra-base hit.
GAME TWO RECAP
Lewis & Clark struck first in the nightcap when Davis doubled to left-center in the third, scoring sophomore
Evyn Lewis, who had reached on a hit-by-pitch.
Whitworth responded in the fourth, plating four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Coffield doubled down the left-field line to drive in two runs, followed by RBI singles from Ty Quiggle and Austin Paul.
The Pioneers got one run back in the fourth when Heron doubled and scored on Potter's infield single, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Whitworth extended its lead to 6-2 with runs in the seventh and eighth. Paul drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, and Coffield added his second RBI double in the eighth.
Lewis & Clark's comeback began in the eighth. After Davis and Sandoval were both hit by pitches, Heron walked to load the bases. Cavagnaro was then hit by a pitch, forcing in Davis. Potter followed with an RBI single, and sophomore
Michael Aikawa grounded into a double play that allowed Heron to score, making it 6-5.
The Pioneers tied the game in the ninth when Davis walked and advanced to third on consecutive walks to Sandoval and Heron. With the bases loaded, Cavagnaro drew another walk, forcing in Davis to send the game to extra innings.
In the 10th, Aikawa singled and advanced to second on Lewis' sacrifice bunt. After
Eli Steinhaus was intentionally walked, Gonzaga delivered the game-winning single through the right side, scoring Aikawa and securing the 7-6 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Pioneers reached base via a walk, hit-by-pitch, or intentional walk in 10 of their final 18 at-bats, including four straight plate appearances in the eighth and ninth innings.
- Whitworth's starter, Huntsman, threw 81 pitches in seven innings in Game 2, while three Pirates relievers combined for 85 pitches over 2 1/3 innings.
- Before Saturday's Game 1 shutout, the Pioneers had gone 169 games without being shut out. Their last scoreless game was a 2-0 loss at Pacific on Feb. 22, 2020.
- Heron scored two runs in Game 2, including the tying run in the eighth.
- Cavagnaro recorded three hits across both games and drove in two runs in the second game, including the game-tying RBI in the ninth.
