#1 Denison Downs Baseball In Non-Conference Action

First year Yuma Noda recorded his first career hit with an RBI double

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College baseball first year Garrett Lewis reached base four times, but the River Otters fell 22-4 to #1 Denison University on Tuesday afternoon at Jerry Gatto Field.Ā
Ā
THE BASICSĀ
Ā
#1 Denison 22, Lewis & Clark 4
(Lewis & Clark 7-9)
(Denison 10-1)Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Denison scored 12 runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead and never looked back in the first all-time meeting between the two programs.Ā
Ā
G. Lewis put together a strong game in his second collegiate start. The first baseman went 2-3 with two runs scored, two walks and a double. Senior Brandon Gonzaga added a pair of hits in two at-bats.Ā
Ā
First year Yuma Noda chipped in an RBI double for his first collegiate hit and a walk in two trips to the plate.Ā

Lewis & Clark went with a bullpen game and used eight pitchers across the nine innings. Junior Felix Gibeault threw a team-high two innings and allowed five runs (one earned) and struck out four. Sophomores Matt Stanislavsky (one run), Sam Burchi (zero runs), first year Calvin Martinez (zero runs), junior Owen Eisen (zero runs) and junior Bret Potter (zero runs) all threw at least one inning and allowed one run or fewer.Ā
Ā
Denison grabbed the lead in the top of the first on a one-out walk and a two-out, RBI double from Jack Rollo.Ā
Ā
The River Otters responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Will Michelman and G. Lewis posted back-to-back, one-out hits. With two down, sophomore Evan Carrubba-Rice lifted a fly to right field that bounced off the top of the right fielder's glove allowing both runners to score. It marked the first time Denison has trailed since their second game of the season – when they fell to #5 Salisbury 5-1.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark would keep the Denison offense at bay for the first four innings. Burchi threw a 1-2-3 second inning and Martinez and Eisen each stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fourth frames.
Ā
Denison blew the game open with 12 runs on seven hits, three hits by pitches and a walk in the top of the fifth. Rollo capped off the frame with the first of three home runs for the Big Red.Ā
Ā
The visitors would add four more runs in the sixth and seventh innings and one in the top of the eighth.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark scored a single run in both the seventh and eighth innings.Ā
Ā
Noda worked a pinch-hit walk to lead off the seventh inning and took second on a single from junior Eli Steinhaus. Junior Michael Aikawa drove in Noda from second with a single off the wall in right field.Ā
Ā
Noda was involved in the scoring again in the eighth inning. G. Lewis worked a one-out walk and junior Evyn Lewis beat out an infield single to put two runners on with two outs. Noda sliced a double into the right-field corner for his first collegiate hit and G. Lewis raced all the way home to cap off the scoring.Ā
Ā
