ORANGE, Calif.—Lewis & Clark College baseball racked up 27 runs on 26 hits, to cruise to a doubleheader sweep of Chapman University on Saturday at Hart Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis & Clark belted 10 extra-base hits and allowed just four hits over the final 11.1 innings of Saturday's doubleheader.
Sophomore
Will Michelman drove in seven runs across the two games. The left fielder finished 5-9 with seven RBI, two doubles and a hit by pitch.
In game two, junior
Owen Eisen and sophomore
Sam Burchi combined to limit the hosts four hits and allowed the fewest runs by the Lewis & Clark pitching staff in a game this season (three).
GAME ONE
Four hitters finished with three or more RBI and Lewis & Clark posted four innings with multiple runs to cruise past Chapman.
Junior
Michael Aikawa paced the River Otters offensively. The third baseman went 3-5 with four runs scored, five RBI, three stolen bases, a walk, a double and a homer. Michelman chipped in two hits, four RBI, a walk and a double. Juniors
Eli Steinhaus and
Dylan Lee each registered three RBI. Steinhaus finished 2-3 with two runs, three RBI, a double and a homer. Lee went 0-3 with a run scored, three RBI and a walk.
Senior
Nate Kerr earned his first win of the season. He held the hosts scoreless for the first four innings, before giving up two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Kerr scattered five hits, two walks and six runs across 5.2 innings. The senior added six strikeouts. Junior
Felix Gibeault came on for the final 2.1 innings and allowed two walks and struck out two.
Lewis & Clark took control for good with seven runs in the top of the third inning. Steinhaus opened the inning with a leadoff home run.
Brandon Gonzaga followed with a single, stole second and raced home on an Aikawa RBI double. Lewis & Clark loaded the bases with a
Gavin Mangano single and a
Bret Potter walk. Lee made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly and senior
Ryan Sanderson followed with an RBI single through the left side. Lewis & Clark loaded the bases again when
Evan Carrubba-Rice walked. Michelman pushed the lead to 6-0 with a two-run double and Steinhaus closed out the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly.
The River Otters tacked on five more runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 12-2. With the bases loaded and no outs, Lee lofted a fly ball to left field that was dropped to make it 8-2. Sanderson followed with a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Michelman came through with a two-run single. Steinhaus capped off the scoring with an RBI double to right-center to make it 12-2.
Chapman closed the deficit to 12-6 in the bottom of the inning but Lewis & Clark immediately responded with two more runs in the seventh. Gonzaga started off the inning with a hit by pitch, stole second and scored on an Aikawa RBI single. With two runners in scoring position and one out, Aikawa raced home on a wild pitch.
The River Otters tacked on three final runs in the eighth inning. Michelman started the inning with a walk and Steinhaus was hit by a pitch. Aikawa followed with a three-run homer to account for the 17-6 score. With the River Otters leading by 10+ runs, Gibeault struck out the final batter of the eighth, to strand two runners in scoring position, and secure the mercy-rule win.
GAME TWO RECAP
Eisen and Burchi shut down the Chapman offense and Lewis & Clark scored six runs between the sixth and seventh innings to secure the Day One sweep.
Eisen picked up his first decision of the season with six strong innings. The junior allowed three hits, no walks and two runs over six innings. He added five strikeouts to move to 1-0. Burchi came on for the final three innings and scattered one hit, five walks and three strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.
Michelman, Mangano and Potter all finished the contest with three hits. Michelman went 3-5 with three RBI and a double. Mangano finished 3-4 with three runs scored, a double and a walk. Potter chipped in three hits, three runs, an RBI and a home run in four at-bats.
Lewis & Clark opened the scoring in the top of the first. Aikawa singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on a Mangano single. Both runners advanced 90 feet on a failed pickoff attempt to make it 1-0.
Sophomore
Jacob Shannon-Wilkerson made it 2-0 in the second inning when he belted his second home run of the season.
The two teams traded runs in the third and fourth. After Chapman got on the board in the bottom of the third, Potter started the fourth with a solo home run to left-center to push the lead to 3-1.
Chapman cut the deficit to 3-2 with a solo home run in the fifth but Lewis & Clark would register a big response in the next two innings.
Mangano started the sixth inning with a double and moved to third on a Potter single. Lee made it 4-2 with an RBI double to right-center. Junior
Evyn Lewis plated both runners with a single through the left side to push the lead to 6-2. After a pitching change, Steinhaus and Gonzaga (RBI) delivered back-to-back singles to extend the lead to 7-2.
Lewis & Clark added two more runs in the seventh. Mangano and Potter recorded back-to-back, one-out singles and Michelman came through with a two-out double down the right-field line to score both runners.
Michelman added one final RBI in the ninth, when he singled through the right side to score Mangano from second.
Chapman tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth. With two down, the hosts recorded three walks and a single to make it 10-3. Burchi struck out the next batter looking to close out the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Lewis & Clark has won four games in a row to move over .500 for the first time since they were 1-0.
- The River Otters posted season-highs for runs (17), RBI (16), sac flies (three), stolen bases (10) and hit by pitches (six) and tied their season-high for hits (15) in game one on Saturday.
- Gonzaga went 4-4 on the basepaths in game one to improve to 10-11 on the season. The senior moved into fifth place in program history for career stolen bases in game one (42).
- Mangano has hit safely in all nine games he's appeared in this season. The junior is hitting .382 (13-34) with 10 runs scored and six RBI.
- Lewis & Clark is 6-0 this season when scoring seven runs or more. The River Otters are averaging 10.33 runs per game in their six wins.
- The three runs allowed by the Lewis & Clark pitching staff in game two are the fewest by the River Otters since shutting out Linfield (8-0) on May 3. Eisen threw six shutout innings in that contest.
WHO'S NEXT
Lewis & Clark will take on Chapman for two more games on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday.
