Baseball Wins Series Finale, To Claim Series Win Over Chapman

First year Calvin Martinez allowed two runs in game four to earn his first collegiate win

ORANGE, Calif.—Lewis & Clark College baseball first year Calvin Martinez allowed two runs over five innings in game two, to earn his first collegiate victory, and help the River Otters clinch a 3-1 series win over Chapman University.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENEDĀ

After being held to three runs in game three, eight River Otters finished with two hits in game four, to help Lewis & Clark earn their fifth win in their past six games.Ā

Martinez teamed up with juniors Austin Watkins and Bret Potter to limit Chapman to seven hits and four runs scored in the series finale.Ā 
Ā 
Juniors Eli Steinhaus (5-8) and Gavin Mangano (4-9) each contributed multiple hits in both games to lead Lewis & Clark offensively.Ā

GAME ONE RECAPĀ 
Ā 
Chapman scored two runs in three consecutive innings to grab a 6-3 lead and the Panthers bullpen held Lewis & Clark scoreless to secure the win.Ā 
Ā 
Steinhaus and Mangano combined for five hits of Lewis & Clark's eight hits. Steinhaus went 3-3 with a double out of the nine-hole. Mangano chipped in two hits, a run scored and a double of his own. Junior Dylan Lee drove in two of the team's three runs.Ā

Sophomores Dillon Foster and Matt Stanislavsky each threw four innings for Lewis & Clark. Foster earned the start and allowed nine hits and six runs (four earned). Foster added three strikeouts. Stanislavsky held Chapman in check over the final four innings. The sophomore allowed one hit, one walk and struck out seven in four scoreless innings of work.Ā

Lewis & Clark took the early lead for a third-straight game. With two down in the top of the second, senior Ryan Sanderson doubled and sophomore Evan Carrubba-Rice followed with a walk. Sophomore Will Michelman came through with an RBI single to center field to make it 1-0.Ā

Chapman responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second thanks to two hits, two errors and a stolen base.Ā

The River Otters grabbed the lead back in the top of the third. Junior Michael Aikawa walked and Mangano followed with a hit by pitch. After Bret Potter grounded out to move both runners over, Lee drove a single to left field to plate both runners.Ā

Chapman grabbed the lead back with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the third. The hosts added two more runs in the fourth but Foster struck out the final three batters of the frame to strand a runner at third base.Ā

Lewis & Clark put runners on in four of the final five innings, including loading the bases in the sixth, but Chapman managed to keep the River Otters at bay.Ā

GAME TWO RECAPĀ

Lewis & Clark exploded for 16 hits and scored runs in five of their final seven at-bats, to secure the series win with an 8-4 victory.Ā

Eight of the nine Lewis & Clark starters posted two hits in the win. First year Garrett Lewis and Michelman each finished with two hits, two RBI and a walk. Potter tacked on two hits, three runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Senior Brandon Gonzaga chipped in two hits, two runs scored, an RBI and his first home run of the season.Ā

Martinez earned his first collegiate win in his second career start. The first year scattered three hits, one walk and two runs, while striking out two over five innings of work. Watkins threw three innings of relief and scattered four hits, two runs and struck out one. Potter came on for the ninth inning and retired the side in order.Ā 
Ā 
Lewis & Clark scored a single run in the third-fifth innings to grab a 3-2 lead. Gonzaga led off the third with a solo home run to give the River Otters a 1-0 edge. The visitors loaded the bases in the fourth on a Potter walk, Michelman single and Lewis walk. Sophomore Jacob Shannon-Wilkerson drove in Potter with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.Ā

Lewis & Clark pushed their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth. Potter sparked the rally with a two-out single. After he stole second, Michelman ripped a single through the right-side to plate Potter.Ā

With the River Otters nursing a 3-2 lead after six, they posted five runs in their next two at-bats to build an 8-2 edge.Ā

Steinhaus started the seventh with a single and Mangano and Potter followed with one-out singles to load the bases. Michelman worked a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 4-2 and Lewis drove a single through the right side to score Mangano and Potter to make it 6-2.Ā

The River Otters tacked on two more runs in the eighth. Junior Evyn Lewis, Gonzaga and Aikawa all singled to load the bases with one out. Mangano extended the Lewis & Clark lead with an RBI single and Potter delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 8-2.Ā

BY THE NUMBERSĀ 
  • The River Otters hit .352 across four games against Chapman. They recorded 50 hits, 38 runs and 14 extra-base hits (nine doubles, five home runs). Lewis & Clark added 19 walks, 11 hit by pitches and went 14-16 on the basepaths.Ā 
  • Mangano (9-16), Steinhaus (8-15) and Michelman (8-16) all hit .500 or better across the four games. Michelman finished with a team-high 10 RBI and posted at least one RBI in all four games. He sits tied for second on the team with his 10 RBI on the season.Ā 
  • In his last three outings, Stanislavsky has allowed one run over 7.1 innings (1.23 ERA) and struck out 13.Ā 
  • Martinez is the seventh different Lewis & Clark pitcher to earn a victory this season.Ā 
  • Aikawa and Potter both posted their team-leading, seventh multi-hit game of the season in game two on Sunday.Ā 
  • Mangano's 11-game hitting streak is the second-longest by a River Otter in the past three seasons. Aikawa closed the 2025 season on a 13-game hitting streak and stretched his streak to 18 games to begin the 2026 season.Ā Ā

Lewis & Clark will return to Northwest Conference play, when they travel to Whitworth University for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is scheduled to start on Saturday at Noon.Ā
