Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College first-year Sonya Drayton won five matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional Championship to claim the singles title, earn ITA All-American honors and advance to the National Small College Championships the weekend of Oct. 18. She is the first Lewis & Clark woman to win the ITA Northwest Regional singles title since Wiktoria Plawska in 2016.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Drayton defeated Whitman College's Renata Rosell Puga 6-4, 6-1 in the final. She lost only 13 games and won every match in straight sets on her way to the title.
 
The West Linn, Oregon, native defeated Willamette University's Eva Lief 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before beating Whitman's Gloria Lau 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 16. Drayton earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over George Fox University's Shanah Denham in the quarterfinals and advanced to the final with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Whitman's Emerson Bonner.
 
Singles Recap
 
Senior Maya Curry advanced to the A Draw quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Willamette's Resse Beyrouty in the round of 64 and a 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory over Linfield University's Kaitlynn Canubida in the round of 32. Curry fell to Whitworth University's Paige Oliver in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Junior Anna English and first-year Faith Galyardt joined Drayton and Curry in earning wins in the A Main Draw. English defeated Puget Sound's Isabelle Bourgeau 7-6 (3), 6-4, and Galyardt beat Linfield's Emily Redwood 6-3, 6-4.
 
After dropping a match in the A Main Draw, senior Charlotte Makoni earned three wins in the consolation draw to advance to the final. Makoni defeated Willamette's Sofia Spencer 4-1, 4-1, Whitworth's Andrea DelCastillo 6-2, 7-6 (3) and George Fox's Juhree Kizziar 6-2, 6-2. Makoni fell to Whitworth's Audrey Judson 6-2, 6-3 in the consolation final.
 
In the B Main Draw, sophomore Alex Mignogna advanced to the semifinals with wins over Puget Sound's Ella Norman, 6-2, 6-0; Whitworth's Hannah Wells, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2; and Puget Sound's Nicole Wilson, 6-4, 6-1. Mignogna fell to Whitman's Leah Lovato, 7-5, 6-4, in the semifinals.
 
First-year Cloe Alcorn and juniors Madi Vianzon and Elle Garcia joined Mignogna in earning wins in the B Main Draw. Garcia defeated George Fox's Abigail Gonzales 6-3, 6-3. Vianzon earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Willamette's Eliza Pfaff. Alcorn defeated Willamette's Sylvia Lipp 6-1, 6-1 and received a walkover against Puget Sound's Joy Bean Lowe to advance to the quarterfinals.
 
First-year Annie Burrows earned a 4-0, 4-1 victory over Willamette's Isla Stoddard in the B Draw consolation round of 16.
 
Doubles Recap
 
Drayton and Galyardt advanced to the doubles semifinals with wins over teams from Puget Sound, 8-5; Linfield, 8-0; and Whitworth, 8-0. The duo fell to top-seeded Stella Nishimura and Chloe Takahashi of Pacific 8-5.
 
Vianzon and English and Curry and Makoni each earned wins in the doubles main draw. Vianzon and English defeated a Willamette team 8-0 in the first round. Curry and Makoni defeated a Puget Sound team 8-2 in the first round and a Pacific team 8-1 in the round of 16.
 
Mignogna and Alcorn earned an 8-5 win over Pacific's Morgan Wagoner and Jillian Hom in the doubles consolation bracket.
