PORTLAND, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark College first-year Sonya Drayton was named the Northwest Conference Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
 
Drayton finished the weekend 8-1 between singles and doubles play at the ITA Northwest Regional Championship. She went 5-0 in singles without dropping a set to win the regional title and became the first Lewis & Clark woman to claim the championship since Wiktoria Plawska in 2016. Drayton earned ITA All-America honors with the title and advanced to the National Small College Championships, scheduled for Oct. 15-18.
 
Drayton defeated Whitman's Renata Rosell Puga 6-4, 6-1 in the championship match. She surrendered 13 games across five singles matches and won each contest in straight sets.
 
The West Linn, Oregon, native opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Willamette's Eva Lief. She followed with victories over Whitman's Gloria Lau, George Fox's Shanah Denham and Whitman's Emerson Bonner to reach the final.
 
Drayton also teamed with Faith Galyardt to reach the doubles semifinals with three victories. The duo defeated Frances English and Joy Bean Lowe 8-5 in the first round. Drayton and Galyardt then earned 8-0 wins over teams from Linfield and Whitworth in the round of 16 and quarterfinals before falling to top-seeded Stella Nishimura and Chloe Takahashi of Pacific in the semifinals.
