Heien Collects Third Career NWC Student-Athlete of the Week Honors

The senior posted top-10 times in NCAA DIII this season in all three of her events

HILLSBORO, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College women's outdoor track & field senior Malia Heien earned her third career Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week award, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

Heien earned her first career NWC Women's Track award, after being recognized during the cross country season as a sophomore and senior.

She put together a dominant performance in the first outdoor track & field meet of her senior season. Heien not only won all her three of her events, but she posted top-10 marks in NCAA DIII in all three as well.

The senior opened the Eldon & Chuck Throw Down Meet with a first-place showing in the 1,500M. She finished first out of seven runners and crossed the line 5.87 seconds ahead of the top finisher from Willamette University. Her time of 4:52.60 ranks second in the Northwest Conference and 10th in NCAA DIII this season.

The Colorado native defeated the field by 8.29 seconds - in an even more dominant display in the 800M. Heien crushed the field of 10 runners and sits second in all of NCAA DIII with her time of 2:19.11.

She closed out the meet by running the anchor leg of the 4x400M Relay. The River Otters quartet of seniors Elsie Chin and Miriam Reside, junior Callow Soto and Heien combined for a time of 4:03.84 to beat the top Willamette team by 3.82 seconds. Their time puts them fourth in all of NCAA DIII and seventh in school history.

After a weekend off, Lewis & Clark will return to action when they host the L&C Electric Forest Open Meet on Saturday, March 21.
